RJSN is fighting against the oppressive system that disregards students as 'problems' by campaigning for constructive techniques that create community rather than isolate individuals. The current punishment techniques our schools use isolate the individual student by taking him or her out of school- suspension- and putting them on the street for 3 days. RJSN believes this technique creates a snowball effect by taking students out of school and putting them in a position without any guidance or accountability. RJSN is fighting for peer mediation, peer jury and talking circles which bring students together, hold them accountable for their actions and create a nourishing learning environment in our schools. RJSN is fighting for the implementation of these techniques in our schools by the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year.
RJSN is a coalition organized to fight for constructive alternatives to current punishment techniques in our schools.

Why I Joined RJSN

To punish students by sending them home is not good for anybody. It shows that we do not know how to work with our students and treat them exactly how they are- young adults who will be the leaders of our community. Restorative justice is an approach that makes kids accountable for their actions by allowing them to come together and interact in a community setting. They see how their actions have affected others. Instead of casting our children aside let us listen to them and hear what they have to say. Let us give them the dignity and respect we all want.
